Trinity College Dublin School of Engineering is preparing to showcase its students’ cutting-edge innovations at the highly anticipated SUGAR EXPO 2023. As a proud member of the SUGAR global innovation network for over 10 years, Trinity College Dublin has been at the forefront of collaborative projects, fostering international partnerships, and driving forward advancements in engineering and technology.

 

SUGAR, whose mission is to Globally enable responsible innovation through human centricity, brings together 25 universities from five continents, alongside industry partners who sponsor the projects. At Trinity College Dublin, the School of Engineering has formed dynamic teams with two prominent institutions: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and SEW-Eurodrive (one of the largest global manufacturers of industrial gear-motor systems), as well as the University of São Paulo (USP) and SUMMIT (a Trinity College Dublin research initiative addressing sustainable urban mobility).

Under the SUGAR framework, each university supplies a team of highly skilled MSc (Master of Sciences) level students, who work tirelessly over a period of nine months on their designated projects. These projects receive intense supervision and guidance from academic mentors and industry professionals, ensuring a holistic and enriching learning experience for the students involved.

The collaboration between Trinity College Dublin, KIT, and SEW-Eurodrive has resulted in an exciting project named DriveAuto. Drawing on their expertise in engineering and technology, the teams have been working diligently to develop innovative solutions that push the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence to deliver enhanced customer service experience.

Simultaneously, Trinity College Dublin has joined forces with USP and SUMMIT to tackle a multifaceted challenge in sustainable urban mobility. Leveraging their combined strengths, the teams have developed ‘STEP’ to address the challenge of assisting companies track & reduce their ‘Scope 3’ emissions by facilitating their employees to switch to more sustainable modes of commuting.

As the teams approach the culmination of their projects, they are gearing up to present their final results at the prestigious 'SUGAR EXPO' event. This year, the event will take place at the SAP global headquarters in Palo Alto, California. Renowned for fostering innovation and technological advancements, this venue provides an ideal platform for the teams to share their achievements with a diverse audience of industry experts, academics, and fellow students.

The 'SUGAR EXPO' serves as a remarkable opportunity for Trinity College Dublin School of Engineering to showcase the talent, dedication, and ingenuity of its students and faculty. It is a testament to the commitment of Trinity College Dublin in nurturing global partnerships, fostering cross-cultural collaborations, and pushing the boundaries of engineering education.

Professor Kevin Kelly, Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning of the School of Engineering at Trinity College Dublin, expressed his excitement about the upcoming event, stating:
