David Taylor is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Biomedical Engineering. He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. He holds degrees of MA, PhD and ScD from the University of Cambridge and Fellowships from Engineers Ireland and the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland.

Research and Professional Activities 1) Fatigue and Fracture of Materials and Components The study of fatigue failure and other mechanisms of fracture in metals and other materials. Fatigue crack propagation and fracture mechanics; fatigue life prediction of components; use of finite element analysis; the behaviour of stress concentrations. 2) Forensic Engineering Failure analysis and metallurgical examination of components for forensic purposes. Consultancy work to engineering companies on component design and life prediction. 3) Bioengineering The assessment of materials for use in human-body implants and other biomaterials. Fatigue and fracture properties of material in humans, animals and plants. Damage and repair in living organisms.
