Mr. Hugh O'Dwyer

Biography

Hugh O’Dwyer is a musician, sound engineer, producer, and academic based in Dublin, Ireland. He is a Teaching Fellow at Trinity College Dublin where he lectures on the M.Phil in Music and Media Technology (MMT) course and for the Department of Electronic Engineering.

In 2021, he completed his Ph.D from TCD under the supervision of Prof. Frank Boland with an emphasis on Machine Learning for Audio Applications, particularly with regards to Sound Source Localization. His Ph.D entitled ‘Sound Source Localization and Virtual Testing of Binaural Audio’ featured work on the subjective and objective evaluation of headphones and ambisonic microphones as well as proposed methods for performing sound source localization of binaural audio using machine learning. He is a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and has published many academic papers with them, speaking at AES conventions in Helsinki, Milan, and Dublin.

Upon finishing his Ph.D, he worked for Music Generation as a musician educator where he developed a CPD course in music technology which was delivered to over 100 music teachers throughout the country. This course enabled Music Generation staff to continue teaching music online during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also works on the Suburban Sounds program where he mentors young musicians in songwriting and music production.

Hugh O’Dwyer is a graduate of the school of Engineering at TCD where he completed an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2015. His final year thesis investigated the perception of different musical instruments in the brain using Electroencephalography (EEG). While a student at TCD, he was active in student activity, acting as auditor for the college Jazz Society as well as Chief Technical Officer and Treasurer for The Trinity Orchestra. In 2016, he was awarded a lifetime honorary membership by The Trinity Orchestra for outstanding contribution to the society.

As a musician and producer, Hugh has worked with a wide variety of artists and has shared the stage with many prominent Irish musicians including Hozier, Saint Sister, Morgana, Conor O’Brien (Villagers), Rachael Lavelle, David Hedderman, Cat Dowling, Neil Dexter, Daire Heffernan, and many others. His band Spies toured Ireland, the UK, and Europe extensively and were critically acclaimed for the release of their 2018 album ‘Constancy’.
