Green Week celebrations began yesterday and will run throughout the week, coinciding with Health and Sports Week, which starts on Thursday.
A total of 15 events are planned for Green Week, with Monday marking the busiest day with five scheduled activities. Several long-term sustainability initiatives were also launched, aimed at making Trinity College more eco-friendly.
On Monday, the Buttery participated in the “Meat-Free Monday” campaign, serving no meat for the day. Meanwhile, the “Cup Collective” initiative was introduced at the Perch Café, offering sustainable, reusable cups for sale.
The Sustainability Leadership Awards, hosted by Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace, took place yesterday. In addition, a pop-up clothes swap shop ran throughout the day in the Arts Block.
Sustainable sculptures are now visible around campus, with prominent installations near the Arts Block and Rose Garden. A guided tour of these artworks is scheduled for today at 12 pm.
Sculptor Conleth Gent and painter Erika Tyner collaborated to create five wooden pillars displayed on the green outside the Arts Block. The materials used were sourced from a fallen sycamore tree in the Dublin Mountains and a landmark walnut tree from Marlay Park that had been felled by a storm.
Gent explained that the forms were inspired by ancient stones found around South Dublin monuments, with each sculpture representing the evolution of the planet.
Several panel discussions are lined up for the week, including one tomorrow at 2 pm on the relationship between climate and sport, featuring representatives from Trinity Sport, Bohemians FC, and GAA Green Clubs.
Another panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, as part of the “In Discussion with” series, focusing on the intersection of climate and health.
Also on Wednesday, a houseplant swap will be held at 12:30 pm in the Sami Nasr Institute of Advanced Materials (SNIAM) building, along with a Botanic Garden tour, taking place off-campus at 12 pm.
Health and Sports Week will begin Thursday, with events primarily centered around the theme "Trinity on the Move."
