Trinity College Dublin has joined the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), a global community of internet and media technology innovators. This partnership marks a significant step in advancing open standards for video, audio, and multimedia technologies worldwide.
Trinity’s involvement will be led by the Signal Processing for Media Applications (Sigmedia) Group within the School of Engineering. Established in 1998 by Professor Anil Kokaram, Sigmedia is renowned for its pioneering research in audio and video technology. The group will collaborate with AOMedia to explore emerging use cases, develop technical advancements, and devise strategies to promote a more inclusive and open media ecosystem.
Prof. Anil Kokaram expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration:
“We are excited to join AOMedia and work alongside industry leaders to advance open media technologies. Our commitment to innovation and open research aligns perfectly with AOMedia’s mission, and we are eager to contribute to creating open media standards that drive accessibility and inclusivity.”
As an AOMedia member, Sigmedia researchers will play a key role in developing next-generation video codecs, including AV1, a high-performance codec that enables superior video streaming without costly licensing fees. Their expertise will also support advancements in volumetric media, creating immersive and interactive multimedia experiences, and the development of open audio codecs for enhanced sound quality in modern applications.
Prof. Alan O’Connor, Head of the School of Engineering at Trinity, emphasised the importance of the partnership:
“This collaboration reflects our School’s commitment to impactful, cutting-edge research. It also aligns with Trinity’s mission to make ground-breaking research globally accessible through our Open Source Programme Office. Joining AOMedia reinforces our dedication to fostering innovation that benefits the wider digital community.”
Matt Frost, Chair of AOMedia, welcomed Trinity’s participation:
“We are thrilled to have Trinity College Dublin join the Alliance for Open Media. Their outstanding research and technological expertise will significantly enhance our collaborative efforts to develop open and accessible media standards. The Sigmedia group’s contributions will be invaluable to our mission and the broader open media ecosystem.”
Trinity’s membership in AOMedia underscores its commitment to driving innovation in open media technologies. The collaboration positions Trinity as a key player in shaping the future of accessible, high-performance multimedia, benefiting users and creators worldwide.
