The IEEE Student Branch at Trinity College Dublin hosted its second annual "Threesis" event on February 19, 2024. This flagship event challenges early-stage researchers to present their work in a concise, three-minute format accessible to a broad audience. Over 40 attendees witnessed nine postgraduate students present on topics ranging from magnetism and machine learning to the cocktail party problem. After each presentation, the audience engaged with the speakers through questions and discussions.

Judged by experts from the School of Engineering, the event highlighted the diverse research happening at Trinity. The winners were Wai Qian Tham, who took first place for his presentation on enhancing daylighting in buildings to improve occupant health, Luca Terribili, who was first runner-up with his research on sustainable rare earth mineral extraction, and Sara Carta, who won the audience choice award for her talk on how the brain filters competing speech at cocktail parties.

Eimear Rouine, a representative from the Dean of Graduate Students Office, praised the event, noting how accessible the PhD students made their complex research. The panel of judges, including Dr. Brooke Tornifoglio, lauded the impressive variety of topics and the students' ability to effectively communicate their work.

The IEEE Threesis is an annual event organized by Trinity’s IEEE Student Branch. It aims to bridge the gap between specialized research and broader public understanding by challenging students to distill their research into a three-minute presentation. Following this year's competition, the event concluded with a reception and the announcement of winners.

The event is sponsored by Trinity’s School of Engineering and the Discipline of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. The IEEE Student Branch, founded in 2022, continues to promote technology advancement at Trinity through various events and projects. The branch recently received the "2023 IEEE Regional Exemplary Student Branch Award" in recognition of its contributions.
