We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Jenny Bortoluzzi., a highly accomplished marine biologist, has joined the Irish Environmental Network (IEN) as Project Coordinator for Marine Biodiversity and Offshore Renewable Energy Capacity Building. With her extensive background in marine science and a passion for integrating conservation with practical solutions, Jenny will play a crucial role in advancing Ireland’s efforts to protect its marine ecosystems while supporting sustainable offshore renewable energy development.
Jenny brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role. She holds a PhD in marine biology from Trinity College Dublin, where her research focused on the ecology and conservation of elasmobranchs—sharks and rays. Her expertise in understanding the complex interactions between these species and their environment will provide valuable insights for the IEN as they continue to advocate for marine conservation and responsible energy solutions.
Throughout her career, Jenny has demonstrated a commitment to finding innovative, impactful solutions that address the urgent environmental challenges facing our planet. Her approach balances the needs of nature with those of people, ensuring that conservation efforts are sustainable and socially equitable. This makes her an ideal fit for IEN’s mission to promote environmental protection through collaboration and capacity building.
Jenny’s professional journey has been enriched by her work with international organisations such as the IUCN Shark Specialist Group and the Environmental Justice Foundation. In these roles, she contributed to global efforts to conserve vulnerable shark species and combat environmental injustices. At the national level, Jenny has worked closely with Irish NGOs like the Irish Basking Shark Group, where her research and advocacy have helped protect one of Ireland’s most iconic marine species.
Her extensive experience in managing large-scale, collaborative projects will be invaluable as the IEN continues to foster partnerships between NGOs, government bodies, and industry stakeholders. With offshore renewable energy increasingly recognised as a critical component of Ireland’s green transition, Jenny’s leadership will help ensure that these developments occur in harmony with the marine biodiversity we aim to protect.
Jenny's appointment strengthens IEN’s capacity to address Ireland’s environmental challenges while promoting solutions that benefit both nature and society. Congratulations, Dr. Jenny Bortoluzzi.!
