Trinity College Dublin celebrated its 22nd annual Green Week in 2024, under the theme "Healthy Planet, Healthy People." This event, initiated in 2003 in memory of Professor Simon Perry, has evolved into a significant platform for environmental and sustainability initiatives across the campus.
The week began with the Sustainability Leadership Awards, introduced by Vice President of Biodiversity and Climate Action, Jane Stout, who highlighted Trinity’s progress in implementing its Sustainability Strategy. Stout emphasized the College's shift from focusing on sustainability solely during Green Week to incorporating environmental considerations into daily decision-making. Provost Linda Doyle praised Trinity students’ leadership on climate issues, particularly their participation in COP28.
Sustainability Manager Jane Hackett presented the Sustainability Leadership Awards, which recognized the contributions of 24 individuals, including staff and students. Awardees ranged from students like Lily Hassett, who leads Evergreen magazine, to researchers such as Emma King, whose efforts in the Nature+ Energy project greatly improved Zoology's Green Lab score.
The week featured a range of events, including talks on climate, sports sustainability, health, and biodiversity, as well as initiatives like a plant swap, sculpture exhibitions, and a clothing swap shop. Highlights included a panel discussion chaired by Michelle Tanner, Head of Trinity Sport, where speakers from various sporting organizations discussed the integration of sustainability in sports.
The success of Green Week was made possible by the hard work of the Green Campus Committee and the dedication of the Trinity community. The week culminated in a call for continued involvement, inviting students and staff to join the mission toward a more sustainable future.
