Professor Karen Wiltshire, |
Achieving Our Climate Goals in Transport
|
Transport contributes approximately 20% of Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions. With the government setting a legally binding target to reduce these emissions by 50% by 2030, the transport sector faces a monumental challenge to decarbonise rapidly over the next six years. Join us for an insightful talk by Prof. Brian Caulfield as he discusses the pathways to achieving this ambitious target. Prof. Caulfield is a Professor in Transportation in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at Trinity College Dublin and a Fellow of the College. He has undertaken extensive research on global issues such as the environmental impacts of transport and methods to reduce carbon emissions. In 2017, he addressed the Irish Citizens' Assembly on this topic and recently advised the Climate Change Advisory Council on strategies to decrease transport emissions by 2030. Prof. Caulfield has contributed significantly to the field of transportation research, publishing over 200 papers in high-impact international journals and conferences, and securing approximately €8 million in research funding. He is also involved in multiple national and international research groups and has served in various leadership roles, including as former Chair of the Irish Transportation Research Network. He is an Editor of Transport Policy and an Associate Editor of Sustainable Cities and Society and serves on several international editorial boards. This event is an opportunity to learn from one of the leading experts in the field on how research-backed policymaking can drive the transport sector towards a sustainable future.
Farmland Pollinators and Pollination – Influence of Policy and Practice - Prof. Jane Stout, Friday, 29th of November, 12-1pm
Date | Time | Speaker (s) | Title of webinar |
---|---|---|---|
Friday, 29th of November 2024 | 12.00-13.00 | Prof. Jane Stout, Vice Provost for Biodiversity & Climate Action in the Provost's Office and Professor of Ecology (Botany) at Trinity College Dublin |
Farmland Pollinators and Pollination – Influence of Policy and Practice |
We are excited to announce that Professor Jane Stout, Vice Provost for Biodiversity & Climate Action in the Provost's Office and Professor of Ecology (Botany) at Trinity College Dublin, will be speaking at this event. Jane is an internationally renowned expert in pollinator and pollination ecology and a leading advocate for biodiversity and its importance. Her research focuses on understanding how land management practices, such as agriculture and urbanisation, influence ecological processes and the benefits nature provides to humans. Jane leads the Plant-Animal Interactions Research group in the School of Natural Sciences at Trinity, where she works across disciplines and with a broad range of stakeholders to improve environmental policy and practice. She is the co-founder and Chair of the Board of the Irish Forum on Natural Capital (www.naturalcapitalireland.com), and co-founder and Deputy Chair of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan (www.pollinators.ie). This event will explore the critical role of pollinators, such as bees and hoverflies, in supporting both crop and wild plant pollination in agricultural landscapes. Despite their importance, these insects are in decline due to agricultural intensification, extensive agrochemical use, and habitat loss. We will examine how international and EU-level biodiversity frameworks aim to restore pollinators, and discuss the complex interactions between pollinators and factors such as floral resources, habitat features, pesticide use, and disease threats. Balancing pollinator conservation with the practicalities of maintaining farm productivity is a challenge for policy-makers and farmers alike. Professor Stout will share examples from Irish farming landscapes, showcasing innovative, whole-farm approaches and the importance of monitoring to ensure success. Whether you are a farmer, policy-maker, or interested in biodiversity conservation, this event will provide valuable insights.

Navigating Uncertainty for A Sustainable Future: An Example from the Nexus of Geology, Built Environment and Human Health. |
Join us for an insightful online event, Navigating Uncertainty for a Sustainable Future, on Friday, 31st January 2025, from 13:00 to 14:00. The event will feature a presentation by Dr. Quentin Crowley, an expert in Earth System change and sustainability research, who will explore how deep uncertainty affects decision-making in sustainability contexts.
In our complex world, long-term decisions regarding sustainability often involve multiple layers of uncertainty. Dr. Crowley will introduce a pioneering framework that tackles this uncertainty using a Systems Thinking approach within socio-environmental systems. By focusing on the intersection of geology, the built environment, and human health, this framework leverages innovations in remote sensing and digital visualisation to simplify complex systems and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders. This approach is essential for developing more sustainable practices in areas where complexity and uncertainty are prevalent.
Dr. Crowley’s work spans from understanding Earth's ancient processes to addressing contemporary environmental challenges, such as climate change and human health impacts like radon exposure. His ground-breaking research has influenced both scientific understanding and policy, including the development of Ireland’s new radon map in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
This event will offer valuable insights not only for those working in geoscience, environmental policy, and the built environment, but also for anyone interested in how innovative frameworks can inform decision-making under uncertainty. Dr. Crowley will demonstrate how this framework can be adapted to other fields, offering a practical tool for improving sustainability outcomes across a variety of sectors.
Key Topics:
- Addressing deep uncertainty in socio-environmental systems
- The role of geology in shaping the built environment and human health
- Innovations in remote sensing and digital visualisation for sustainability
- Application of systems thinking for complex decision-making
Don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of the leading voices in Earth System research and discover how a dynamic, qualitative approach can improve our ability to navigate uncertainty for a sustainable future.
