Oral Cancer
This theme involves collaborations between clinicians and basic scientists and encompasses patient orientated research and molecular studies of carcinogenesis and the group is part of the TCD Cancer Research Centre. Prof. Healy has been involved in the pan-European study of risk factors for upper aerodigestive tract cancer, ARCAGE, for over 10 years and is a member of the ENHANCE Consortium. Other patient orientated studies include assessment of the quality of life of Irish oral cancer patients (Denise MacCarthy, Leo Stassen and Conor Barry). Prof. Jeff O’Sullivan is also part of the TCD Cancer Drug Discovery group and has collaborations with NIBRT – The National Institute for Bioprocessing Research & Training in the area of Salivary Glycan Research. The theme overlaps with the Microbiology group with the analysis of the oral microbiome in patients with oral leukoplakia, a potentially malignant condition.
