Welcome to the Discipline of Drama
A warm welcome to the Discipline of Drama, School of Creative Arts, Trinity College Dublin. The academic study of drama and theatre studies in Trinity combines elements of literary, cultural, historical and sociological studies with a practical understanding of various performing arts.
Drama @ Trinity
Founded in 1984, the Discipline of Drama was the first university discipline in Ireland to offer degree courses in drama and theatre. Decades later, Drama continues to lead the way in teaching and research excellence and has produced many of the leading figures in Ireland's theatre, film and television industries, from playwrights, actors, directors, designers, to producers, teachers and academics. Many of the discipline's alumni are in leading positions within creative arts ecologies at the cutting edge of artistic practice. The discipline's lecturers and professors are all research active with international reputations in their respective specialisms, and all teach across our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Drama @ Trinity produces performances that are open to the public, hosts professional theatre companies from all over the world, and strives to bridge the gap between education and industry through outreach, placement and social engagement.
Research strengths in Drama currently lie in the field of Irish & European Theatre, Theatre & Nation, Interculturalism/globalisation & performance, Identity Politics & Performance, and Performance & Technology. Drama is located in the Samuel Beckett Centre that comprises a theatre, acting studios and seminar rooms. Drama has a formal link with the Abbey Theatre, principally for the development of training for theatre practitioners, and with the International Institute for Integration Studies.
The location of Trinity in the heart of Dublin permits students to experience a wide range of contemporary theatre practices. Professional practitioners, scholars and theatre companies regularly visit Drama to discuss their work and deliver workshops, seminars or lectures.
