Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations - Modules

The cultures and societies of the Middle East have been deeply influential in shaping European and western values. In spite of this, the region and its peoples are often misunderstood and represented. Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations is the study of the historical origins as well as contemporary culture of a wide range of societies of the region, providing you with an insight into the contemporary Middle East and to the challenges of diversity and multiculturalism in an increasingly globalised world.

First Year - Junior Fresh

In the first year students take 3 modules in each semester (Michaelmas Term and Hilary Term), in the origins of Ancient Near Eastern, medieval and modern Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic civilizations. Exploration of these histories, cultures and societies uses literature, inscriptions, and archaeological evidence as well as exploring contemporary .

  • Introduction to the History of the Ancient Near East (MT)
  • Introduction to Jewish History and Culture (MT)
  • Introduction to the Modern Middle East (HT)
  • Introduction to Islamic Civilisations (HT)
  • Literary Cultures of the Middle East and North Africa (HT)

Second Year - Senior Fresh

In the Senior Freshman year, the number of credits/modules taken depends on each student’s Trinity Joint Honours pathway.

Students choose their modules from the range on offer, which can change from year to year in accordance with our lecturers’ evolving research. Whatever you choose, you will study a range of diverse cultures in the ancient, medieval and modern worlds through political, religious and literary texts, material culture, blogs and film. Courses you may choose from include:

  • The Modern Middle East, Europe and America
  • History and Culture of the Ottoman Empire
  • Jews in European Society from 1750
  • Islam in Europe
  • Intellectual Trends in Early Judaism
  • History and Culture of the Ottoman Empire

You may choose (but are not required) to study one language: Arabic or Hebrew or Turkish

You may also take a course in Trinity College's Electives programme www.tcd.ie/trinity-electives or choose from a wide range of Approved Modules from other departments across the University.
