History of Art and Architecture is about the study of images, objects and buildings. It is unique in developing high levels of visual literacy applicable to a range of career pathways. It explores why works of art look the way they do and seeks to discover what they say about the societies that created them. It develops skills in visual analysis, critical assessment, and communication.

Junior Fresh

The first year in History of Art and Architecture is a foundation year, during which students are provided with a broad survey of the developments art and architecture from the classical era to the present day. In addition, they have specialized classes exploring basic elements of the visual language and theoretical perspectives of imagery, objects and of architectural structures. Particular emphasis is placed on direct engagement with this environment and on getting to know the national and College collections at first hand.

Senior Fresh

In your second year you will deepen your knowledge of the history of art and architecture through modules that explore cultural intersections in art, and Irish art history using a thematic approach. You will learn about the display and collecting of art together with the different theoretical approaches to art history. Depending on your choice of pathway, you will also be given the opportunity to select from a range of optional courses and Trinity electives and/or open modules. Optional History of Art modules include a study trip to a European city; a module that allows students to gain credit for internships and other practice-based experience; and modules in gender and in Japanese art.

Depending on the pathway that you have chosen, in your final year, you will research and write a dissertation, and choose from a range of special subject topics. Special subjects are weekly specialised seminars, usually based on staff-members’ research, which enable students to explore areas of Art and architectural history in greater depth.
