Need contraception? Thinking of getting a coil? The Pill? Implanon?
There are now so many contraceptive options. The College Health Service has doctors and nurses who have a special interest in contraception. The doctors are trained and experienced in the insertion and removal of coils and Implanon. Both are doctors and nurses can prescribe the Pill too. We can take you through all the options and help you find the contraceptive method that works best for you.
College Health participates in the HSE Free Contraception Scheme. You are eligible for free contraception if you:
- Have a PPS number
- Are aged 17 - 35
Please note you MUST have a PPS number to avail of the Free Contraception Scheme. You can still request an appointment if you do not have a PPS number or are over 35 but there may be a charge for your contraception.

Complete this registration form and you will receive a text message with an appointment date and time to attend College Health for your contraception appointment.
If the appointment doesn’t suit, please phone College Health on 01 896 1591or drop into our reception to arrange a time that works for you.
There are four appointment options on our form:
- First contraception appointment
- Repeat pill prescription
- Implanon consultation
- Coil/IUD consultation
Please note that if you wish to have an Implanon or coil your first appointment is a consultation appointment with a GP to assess suitability and discuss the procedure.

Who can avail of the HSE Free Contraception Scheme?
Anyone aged 17-35 who has a PPS number.

What should I bring to my appointment?
You don’t need anything except your PPS number.
What if I’m outside the age range?
You can still request an appointment using the online booking form but there may be a charge for your contraception. Your consultation will be free if you are a registered TCD student but there will be a charge for your prescription in the pharmacy and your procedure if you opt for the Implanon or coil.
How do I book an appointment?
Complete our registration form and we will contact you. You will receive a text message to the mobile number you provide on the contact form with an appointment date and time.
If the date and time do not suit you, please phone College Health on 01 896 1591 to rearrange the appointment or drop into our reception to reschedule.
Is it better to book my appointment using the online registration form or by telephone?
The online registration form is the quickest and most convenient way for you book an appointment as our phone lines are very busy. You can also phone 01 8961591.
Who will I meet?
For a coil or Implanon your first appointment will be with a GP for a consultation. For the Pill your first appointment will be with a nurse or GP. Repeat Pill prescription appointments will be with a nurse.
I have an Implanon/Coil already and would like to have it removed or replaced?
We can remove/replace a device for you or discuss switching to an alternative contraceptive. Select the Implanon or Coil option on the booking form and we will discuss removal or replacement of your device at the consultation appointment.
What types of free contraception is available in College Health?
We have GPs in College Health Service who have a special interest in Contraception and are trained in insertion and removal of Implanon and Coils. You can avail of the pill, the vaginal ring, the coil and Implanon at College Health Service. And of course, we have free condoms all over campus.
