Dr. Garret O'Donnell
Associate Professor, Mechanical, Manuf & Biomedical Eng
Biography
Dr. Garret O"Donnell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in Trinity College Dublin, and is a former graduate of the Dublin Institute of Technology, University of Dublin and NUI Dublin. Dr. O Donnell"s research activities are based on advancing the scientific understanding underpinning advanced manufacturing technologies in sectors such as medical devices, automotive and aerospace sectors. The core focus of the research work is the characterisation of measurable phenomena in materials processing spanning length scales and spanning domains from machining to energy and resource consumption at factory systems level.
Dr. O"Donnell is also an SFI Investigator with the Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research (AMBER) SFI centre at Trinity College. Dr. O"Donnell has developed a research group in the field of manufacturing engineering and industrial energy efficiency research, and supervised 28 graduate research theses to completion, graduating 11 MSc by research and 17 PhD students to date. The majority of the graduates from the group have taken up positions in industry in Ireland, Europe and US. The research activities are strongly aligned with challenges that come from industry, and there is a strong record of collaboration with industry and funding in excess of €6 million as well as strong interdisciplinary collaborations. A measure of the deep tech alignment with industry is that Dr. O'Donnell is one of the only researchers in Trinity College Dublin to have securing funding in 3 of the Disruptive Technology Innovation Fund (DTIF) projects.

- Development of technical intelligence for energy saving in pneumatic production systems
- Summary
- The development of accurate device models for pneumatic actuation systems requires the combination of discrete and continuous models. The integration of these models with appropriate machine control systems such as PLC and DCS systems, could allow for the predictive consumption of compressed air. The postdoctoral research project investigates this specific area in collaboration with HP Ireland and the I2E2 competence centre research activity taking place in TCD

- Adaptive Control of Metal Cutting ADACOM
- Summary
- ADACOM will develop a generic modular adaptive control platform that will allow metal cutting processes to respond to changing circumstances by combining technologically advanced sensor systems, process adaptive control strategies and actuator systems. A broad range of industry sectors; Automotive, Industrial technologies, Printing machine manufacturer have defined common problems which ADACOM will address. Sensor companies together with the knowledge providers WZL, TCD and MONDRAGON University and industry partners will combined their efforts to develop a robust solution. The proposed adaptive control platform will directly benefit the project partner industries and will have a significant impact in industries involved in metal cutting and therefore will offer benefits for wider European industry.

- Investigation of energy efficiency in Polymer Processing- Internal recycling of energy
- Summary
- Polymer processing techniques such as blow moulding and injection moulding use significant amounts of heat, chilled air, compressed air, chilled water and electrical energy. There has been little work published on quantifying the energy use in the polymer processing cycle. For example, capturing the heat energy and reusing this energy in other processes or in space heating is an obvious energy saving solution- effectively "internal recycling". The goal of this project is to optimise the energy usage in polymer processing by undertaking a systems analysis and developing an energy optimisation methodology/model for the blow moulding process in collaboration with an industrial partner.

- Intelligent monitoring of microdrilling operations using acoustic emission
- Summary
- Microdrilling of holes less than 1 mm diameter is becoming commonplace in a number of sectors due to the ongoing trend towards the miniaturisation of products, e.g. diesel injection systems, biomedical filters. While microdrilling is well established in the printed circuit board manufacturing sector, microdrilling presents significant technical and operational challenges. For example, due to the scale it is impossible for the human to monitor the process. The aim of this project is to prove the concept that the acoustic emission signal contains information about the microdrilling process which can be processed in order to detect microdrill wear and prevent microdrill breakage. This will provide cost savings to end users involved in micromanufacturing in the automotive, biomedical and electronics sectors.

- Energy efficiency in discrete and continuous manufacturing
- Summary
- The aim is to develop a methodology for measuring and characterising energy usage in combined continuous and discrete manufacturing processes. The methodology should therefore consider all direct energy inputs into the process (e.g. heat, machine power) and also all supporting energy required (e.g. clean room, lighting, HVAC). This will involve the identification and analysis of the energy consumption metrics within the enterprise.
