Magdalena Matysek

Research Fellow, Botany

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Botany working with Dr Matthew Saunders on the Terrain-AI project, which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and Microsoft. The project seeks to build a digital environmental data platform which will improve our understanding of the role of land management practices in driving climate change and, consequently, help guide policy about its mitigation.

My research within the department is focussed on assessing rehabilitation success of former Bord na Mona extraction peatlands and involves obtaining and analysing greenhouse gas emissions and auxiliary environmental data from these sites.

My background is in soil and plant science. My past work on peatlands spanned different climatic zones, including Malaysia, Alaska and UK. I completed my PhD at the University of Sheffield, UK. My doctoral research looked at the impact of the climate change and water table depth on horticultural crop yield and emissions of greenhouse gases from agricultural peat soils of the Fens in the UK.
