Undergraduate

Welcome to Biomedical Engineering for Undergraduates. Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering is an exciting field of Engineering. Engineering is not just about crunching numbers or solving problems; it is seeing how problems affect society and how society actually changes because of the solutions you provide. Research in biomedical engineering is an example of where the biological, physical and digital worlds interest and where you have the opportunity to have a profound impact on society. Studies are challenging and rewarding and focus on solutions to problems such as designing artificial limbs, organs, walking/hearing aids or implants often requiring the combined expertise of engineers, clinical practitioners and designers.

Year 1 and Year 2 focus on fundamental engineering principles necessary for bioengineering.

Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 focus on bioengineering and medical devices.

Graduates of the MAI with a focus on bioengineering are highly employable. They are perfectly prepared for a career in the medical device sector or for further study leading to a PhD. The medical device and diagnostic industry is a major growth sector in Ireland but also internationally. Irish exports are 8.5 billion euro annually and employment in the sector is approximately 27,000. The Irish government has identified the medical technology sector as a key driver of industrial growth, with nine of the top ten global MedTech companies have set up significant manufacturing bases in Ireland.

Join us for an education that will enable you to become the next leaders in the field of biomedical engineering and have an impact on the human condition.
