Welcome to the Trinity Centre for Biomedical Engineering (TCBE) website
The Trinity Centre for Biomedical Engineering (TCBE) at Trinity College Dublin, established in 2002, is a leading research centre that bridges fundamental research with clinical application. TCBE provides a collaborative framework that unites expertise across engineering, materials science, biology, and medicine to tackle complex health challenges and enhance patient outcomes through advanced medical technologies. Currently, TCBE has 33 active Principal Investigators (PIs) and 18 Clinical Investigators (CIs) from institutions including Trinity College Dublin, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University College Dublin, University of Galway, and Dublin City University.
Our Investigators have received funding from numerous national and international funding agencies including the European Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, Atlantic Philanthropies as well as from Industry partners. The four research themes of the Centre are Medical Devices & Drug Delivery, Neural Engineering, Biomechanics & Mechanbiology and Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine. Details on the publications of our Investigators are available in our people section.
Studying Biomedical Engineering: Students interested in studying Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering might be interested in the undergraduate degree specialisation in Biomedical Engineering. Students who wish to study Biomedical Engineering at Trinity College Dublin apply to the Bachelor in Engineering degree (TR032). The first two years are common to all Engineering students and at the end of the second year students select Biomedical Engineering as their specialist area. In addition, we offer an MSc in Biomedical Engineering, which aims to provide engineers and scientists with the education and creative skills needed to practice in the medical devices industry in Ireland and focus on important clinical needs. There are also opportunities to join us as a PhD or Postdoctoral Researcher. Please see our current list of vacancies and opportunities.
Our website provides an overview of the broad scope of the Centre's activities, from Education to Research Innovation, highlighting our research on key health issues in our rapidly changing society.
