Protecting Trinity’s Old Library and The Book of Kells

The Old Library and its priceless collections are the beating heart of Trinity and of Ireland. Join us in supporting the most ambitious project to conserve and redevelop the building in its 300 year history.

The Old Library is home to unique treasures including the Book of Kells, the 11th century Brian Boru Harp and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic. The magnificent Long Room acts as ‘Ireland’s front room’, welcoming up to a million visitors a year.

But inadequate and outdated fire and flood protections, and centuries of pollution mean that the building and its priceless collections are at critical risk of damage or destruction. One of the world’s most important Library collections is unsafe and deteriorating.

This is why Trinity is undertaking a major project to conserve and protect the Old Library and to upgrade and reimagine both the scholar’s and the visitor’s experience by creating a new Research Collections Study Centre and an inspirational new Book of Kells exhibition.
