Congratulations to Professor Christine Casey on her award for Researcher of the Year 2024 (IRC Legacy awards) and to Mr Daniel Gilligan, the recipient of the Eda Sagarra Medal of Excellence.

The awards were made at an Taighde Éireann / Research Ireland event on 15 January 2025 to celebrate the significant and valuable contributions to knowledge, society, culture and innovation made by IRC-funded researchers.

Professor Casey is Professor of Architectural History, in the School of Histories and Humanities, Trinity College Dublin. She has a particular interest in the relationship of architecture and decoration and the role of craftsmanship in architectural production. She has published widely during her career and is a recipient of IRC and ERC project funding. On receiving her award Professor Casey said “It is a great honour to receive this award. By encouraging collaboration between the Humanities and STEM disciplines in the New Horizons programme, IRC funding opened the way to a dynamic new perspective on the production of architecture in Ireland, predicated on materials and making rather than traditional emphasis on design, style and patronage”.

Daniel Gilligan is the newly appointed Assistant Professor of Law, in the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin. At the Taighde Éireann event, he was awarded the Eda Sagarra Medal of Excellence for being the top-ranked postgraduate researcher in the AHSS category, whose project examines Private Wrongs and Constitutional Order: A Theory of Constitutional Horizontality. This medal is part of the awards recognising excellence in the 2024 Government of Ireland funding scheme for early career researchers. On receiving his award he said “I’m really delighted — and very surprised — to have received this award. There is so much great work being done by postgraduate researchers in the Arts and Humanities, in Trinity and elsewhere, so I am humbled to be recognised. It is a great vote of confidence in the work I’m doing.”
