New undergraduate programme development and approval process

Please contact Joanna Kozielec in Academic Affairs kozielej@tcd.ie, to discuss initial idea and to receive the documentation required.

New Programme Development Process follows these steps:

  1. Strategic Need Identification by Academic: A need for a new programme is identified based on various factors like quality review recommendations, market research, feedback, and partnership opportunities. An academic lead is appointed to liaise with Academic Affairs and complete required documentation.
  2. Consultation: The proposal is discussed with relevant stakeholders, including the Senior Lecturer/Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Faculty Dean, and other College units.
  3. Approval: The proposal must receive sign-off from the School Executive, Faculty Dean and other relevant committees (e.g. Science Course office or UCAGC) before coming to USC.
  4. External Review: The proposal undergoes an external review to ensure it meets national and Trinity standards.
  5. Final Approval: The proposal is presented to the University Council for final approval.

Development Timeline

Timeline for each programme development and approval will be agreed between proposing School and Academic Affairs.

New programme must be fully approved by Council before it can be advertised and added to CAO handbook. Normally, deadline for programme approval is April / early May for inclusion in following year's admission cycle (i.e. programme approved by Council April 2025 will be included in CAO handbook for commencing in year 2026/27).
