PhD Research

Dr Jenny Bortoluzzi is a Research and Teaching Fellow in the Piggott lab. Her background is in Marine Biology having previously studied at the University of Southampton and University of Plymouth (UK). She finished her PhD, titled “Understanding variation in ecology and physiology of marine migratory species”, in Zoology at TCD in March 2023 which she undertook in the Jackson and Payne lab in the same Department. She has previously worked with the French Marine Research Institute (IFREMER) and the IUCN Shark Specialist Group. Her research interests primarily focus on elasmobranch (sharks, skates and rays) ecology and conservation; their interactions with human activities (especially recreational and commercial fisheries), their socio-economic and cultural importance and how to best manage them. She has developed skills in the use of biochemical tracers, biologging ad tagging techniques, and relationship-building with communities and stakeholders. She currently teaches Environmental Monitoring to undergraduate and masters students.
