Sarah Smyth has been a lecturer in the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies since 1987.

She has devoted her career to promoting the study of Russian language and culture in Ireland. Her seminal Russian language textbooks for adult and undergraduate learners, published by Cambridge University Press and Routledge, have been benchmarks in their field since their publication.

Her success in the academic world has been complemented by her active involvement in public bodies and national committees, such as her role as External Chief Examiner for the State Examinations Commission and her role representing Russian on the Post-Primary Languages Initiative (DES).

In recognition of her professional work, Sarah Smyth was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Gorky Literary Institute (Moscow, 2002) and was awarded a Pushkin medal (2010).

Sarah Smyth has five main areas of research interest: the teaching of Russian as a foreign language; the development of narrative technique in the 19th-century Russian literary tradition; the Russian-speaking diaspora in Ireland; linguistic identities and practices; and literary translation.
