The Registrar is responsible for the registers and related affairs of the College and University. They have multiple different responsibilities under the statutes but are perhaps most widely known for their role in convening Commencements - Trinity's graduation ceremonies. In addition, they are responsible for Trinity's links with linked providers of educational services, such as the Marino Institute of Education and the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
The office of the Registrar also has other specific functions relating to inter alia maintaining governing Statutes, awarding Honorary Degrees, and Elections; the office-holder is a member of both the the Board and Council as well as other committees and groups.
(It should be kindly noted that the office and role of the Registrar of Trinity College are somewhat different to similarly-named roles in other institutions.)
The Registrar of Trinity College, for example, convenes Commencements and places the lists of prospective Graduands before the Senate prior to them being approved and then called for Commencements but has no direct oversight of student or alumni records or transcripts, or the practical aspects of preparing for the Commencement ceremonies themselves – all enquiries relating to such matters should be directed to Academic Registry or the Graduation team within Academic Registry. Consequently, the Registrar is not in a position to respond to requests for information relating to academic records, degree transcripts, replacement parchments, translations of parchments or issues relating to attendance at Commencement ceremonies - these enquiries can only be dealt with by Academic Registry.
