Learning Outcomes
In this course students will be exposed to key debates surrounding mass atrocity prevention, with a particular focus on the political dynamics surrounding these crimes. They will become familiar with core conceptual and theoretical debates in this field, as well as develop knowledge of the causal factors leading to the onset of atrocity crimes
Module Learning Aims
This module will familiarise students with contemporary research and perspectives related to mass atrocity prevention. In the module, students will:
- Engage with core conceptual and theoretical debates in the field.
- Gain an understanding of both academic and policy perspectives.
- Draw on interdisciplinary perspectives to understand perpetration.
- Engage with real-world empirical cases.
Module Content
This module will be focused on the political dynamics which underpin mass atrocities and the influence/responsibilities of domestic and international actors. A wide spectrum of literature will be covered, bridging both academic and policy perspectives. Having established a firm foundation in the core concepts in this field of study, students will engage with theoretical and practical debates surrounding atrocity prevention, including the role of key actors, stakeholders, and norms such as the Responsibility to Protect (RtoP).
