The book was published in early 2018 by Routledge in association with PSAI Press. PSAI Press is the publishing arm of the Political Studies Association of Ireland (PSAI), which was founded in 1982 and put on an institutional basis in 1984 as the professional organisation of the study of politics in and of Ireland.

This is the sixth edition of the book (PRI6). The previous edition was published in 2010, the fourth edition in 2005, the third in 1999, the second in 1993 and the first in 1992.
