Some photographs of Irish election 17 May 2002

All but the last of these photographs are a small selection from How Ireland Voted 2002 (Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2003). The next book in the series, How Ireland Voted 2007, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in November 2007, in good time for the christmas market (and it is still available in good bookshops everywhere). How Ireland Voted 2007 contains 31 pages of photographs capturing the spirit of election 2007.

The wolf no doubt represents the Irish electorate. It is a potentially ferocious creature whose mind can be difficult to read and which can turn savagely upon those by whom it is dissatisfied. Yet, we see that in the presence of one man it becomes docile, and he has it literally eating from his hand.
