HAU33009 and HAU33013 Painting in Europe in the long eighteenth century
The module will study some patterns of artistic development in Britain, France and Ireland, with reference to the circumstances found in the main centres of production. It will explore the roles of the major artists of the period such as Gainsborough, Hogarth, Angelica Kauffmann and Reynolds, H.D. Hamilton, Hone and Roberts, Boucher and David. It will consider subject matter across the genres, from history painting to portraiture, landscape, genre painting and still life.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon the successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the trends in eighteenth-century painting and its historical and cultural context;
- present, both orally and in writing, confident and accurate analysis of eighteenth-century European art;
- engage in discussion inter-relating the events, artists, concepts, influences, and texts studied on the course;
- carry out observantly the visual analysis of works of art using the appropriate vocabulary and demonstrating the skills of interpretation and contextualization
