For many years I lived in Britain, which still seems to me the most civilized and democratic country in the world, and I was convinced that the disappearance of this nation of four nations which is the UK would have been a catastrophe not only for England and Scotland, but al also for Europe, where that secession would have encouraged the separatist and independent movements that abound in the whole of Europe – in Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, Poland, Latvia and several other countries – and that, if they prevail, would deal a death blow to the European Union and impel the continent that invented human rights, democracy, and freedom, back to the prehistory of tribes, borders and cultural self-absorption.
