Professor Dmitri Zaitsev
Professor In, Pure & Applied Mathematics
Biography
Dmitri Zaitsev is a Professor in the School of Mathematics, which he joined in 2003. He grew up in Kiev, Ukraine, where he won several Mathematics Olympiads, including All-Soviet-Union mathematical competitions. He studied Mathematics at Lomonosov Moscow State University and completed his Diploma in 1993 and his PhD, within 1 year from Diploma, in 1994 at Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany.
Prior to joining Trinity College Dublin, he held researcher and visiting professor positions in Germany, France, Italy and the USA.
Dr Zaitsev's research comprises contributions to Geometry and Analysis of Several Complex Variables as well as connected areas of Mathematics, such as Lie Groups, Differential Geometry, Real and Complex Algebraic Geometry, Partial Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems.
He has over 20 international collaborators from over 10 countries and has authored over 60 peer-reviewed research articles. One of the conferences he co-founded and co-organised in Italy for many years, "CR Geometry and PDEs", became one of the major international conferences in the field.
In 2014, Dr Zaitsev founded a Trinity Campus Company, Personalotels Ltd, employing mathematical algorithms to help travellers finding hotels matching their personal preferences and avoiding the information overload problem.
Between 2013 and 2019, Dr Zaitsev served as School of Mathematics' Erasmus and Exchange Coordinator, during which period he expanded School's Erasmus agreements from 2 to 8, including 2 new countries, as well as negotiated one University-wide Memorandum of Understanding agreement - the first of this kind initiated by our School.
In 2018, Dr Zaitsev, being concerned with the numbers of academic journals using paywalls, co-founded Global Public Forum for scholarly publishing reform towards Fair Open Access and lead the campaign to collect signatures of support from many distinguished scientists.
In the same year, Dr Zaitsev co-founded Free Journal Network - an ecosystem of community-run high quality academic journals that are free for readers and authors.
Since 2019, Dr Zaitsev has been serving on TCD Open Scholarship Taskforce .
In April 2020 at the beginning of COVID-19 Pandemic, Dr Zaitsev entered as academic mentor multiple hackathons to fight against the virus, including the EUvsVirus hackathon hosted by European Commission, and currently advising over 10 projects among the winners, some of them being listed here.
To further help fighting coronavirus, Dr Zaitsev joined several global communities including the global CoronaWhy community and Just One Giant Lab" with Campaign for Open & Trustworthy Science.

Research Expertise
Description
My research over 25 years has encompassed areas of fundamental mathematics from Complex Analysis, Geometry, Partial Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems to Theoretical Physics. My focus is on solving well-known, long standing, and hard fundamental problems, introducing new techniques to push boundaries, advance our understanding, bring methods from one area into another to increase their reach and impact. My research led to nearly 70 publications, including many top ranked journals, resulted in almost 30 collaborators worldwide from countries including Ireland, USA, Australia, Germany, France, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Switzerland, South Korea, Qatar. In many collaborations I have been the project initiator, introduced new research directions to my collaborators, shared my vision. As a sign of significance and impact of my research, I have received invitations to numerous conferences, seminars and research visits, from leading institutions such as Princeton, Yale, Columbia University and University of Paris IV to countries as diverse as Brazil, Taiwan, Morocco, Ethiopia and Tunisia. I have been invited to every meeting since 1999 of the major bi-annual conference "Complex Analysis and Geometry", one of the most important in my field. https://www.science.unitn.it/cirm/ComplexGeometry2017.html As another sign of impact and influence of my work, I have been receiving numerous inquiries by my colleagues looking to offer me full professorship level positions at their institutions. My latest research listed below received an extremely high appraisal by one of the most eminent leaders in our field, J.J. Kohn, see Section 3.3. Kohn and previously other colleagues also stated that my research served as inspiration for their following work, that I regard as remarkably high impact and recognition. My future research on Kohn's technique tackles new problems inspired by another eminent leader, Y.-T. Siu from Harvard University who regards it as very powerful new tool for general differential equations, including Navier-Stokes equation, the subject of a Millennium Prize Problem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Prize_ProblemsProjects
- Title
- Geometry of Real Submanifolds in Complex Spaces
- Summary
- It is well-known that any surface in the euclidean space can be locally transformed into a plane by a suitably chosen differentiable coordinate change. However, this is no more true if the coordinates are complex and the coordinate change is holomorphic, i.e. "differentiable" in the complex sense. In fact, it is an old and still unsolved problem to decide, which surfaces can be transformed into each other by such a coordinate change. A deeper understanding of this problem is the subject of my project. Accomplishments include construction of normal forms, i.e. finding natural distinguished coordinates, in which the surfaces can be compared explicitly; comparison of various natural equivalence relations for surfaces - under coordinate changes given by formal power series and equivalences at the level of lower order terms of any order.

External referee for multiple grants and projects, including a large grant for 5 years with several postdoctoral and postgraduate positions attached, one of the largest grants in my research field.
Refereed for many world's top mathematics journals.
Cofounder of "Public Forum for scholarly publishing reform towards Fair Open Access (FOA) with focus on action". Member of the Fair Open Access Alliance. https://publishing-reform.gitlab.io/
Cofounder and Invited Advisory Committee Member, the Free Journal Network supporting and promoting high-quality academic journals that have no financial barriers to readers and authors. Together with M. Wilson, we have: - cofounded the FJN, - designed the concept from scratch, - reached out to large groups of experts and leaders in Open Access publishing, - attracted, invited, and evaluated member journals, - created and maintained an efficient communication forum. In contrast to commercial paywall-based journals, all FJN member journals are accessible to every citizen worldwide, while remaining competitive and of high quality by not charging their authors. Our activity therefore critically supports Trinity's mission to engage society in the quest for knowledge. https://freejournals.org/fjn-organization/governance/
