Based on the submission of some of his poetry Professor Peter Arnds was selected from a large pool of applicants to spend two weeks in September 2012 as poet-in-residence in the Heinrich Böll Cottage in Dugort, Achill Island. The German Nobel Laureate lived here in the 1950s and many of his impressions of Ireland recorded in his 'Irish Diary' are based on his stay on Achill Island. The writer/artist in residence programme is funded and supported by the Mayo Co Council, the Arts Council of Ireland, and the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Germany. It is the purpose of this residency programme to give artists and writers a tranquil space in which their creativity can flourish and where they share their work with the local community by way of public readings and visits to schools and community organisations.

Irish Undergraduate Award 2011

Our graduate Laura Sinnott (TSM German & History) received an Irish Undergraduate Award (category: languages & linguistics) from the Irish President Mary McAleese this October. Congratulations, Laura!

Dr Gillian Martin has been appointed Head of Department. Congratulations!

Jürgen Barkhoff has been promoted to Associate Professor and appointed as College Registrar. Congratulations!

Helen O’Sullivan has received an IRCHSS postgraduate scholarship - Congratulations!

The Department has been awarded the German-Irish Chamber of Commerce Gold Medal

Prof Moray McGowan has been appointed Head of the new School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies. Congratulations!

Dr Tim Jackson has been appointed to the position of Associate Professor in June 2006. Congratulations!

The Department of Germanic Studies received the European Award for Languages for its participation and contribution to the Transferable Skills Project.

Katrin Eberbach received a Provost's Teaching Award.

Cordula Politis has been awarded a three-year Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences from October 2006.

Anne Boden has received a Government of Ireland Award - Congratulations!

Sinead Crowe has received a Government of Ireland Award - Congratulations!

Rachel MagShamráin has been awarded a IRCHSS postdoctoral fellowship

Andrew Cusack and Helen Finch, postgraduate research students in the Department, have both been awarded three-year Research Scholarships by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences from October 2003. This follows a similar award of an IRCHSS Scholarship to Jennifer Curran in 2002.

These are competitive scholarships available to students in any subject to undertake one academic year of postgraduate study in Germany. Again the Department was exceptionally successful, gaining four out of the seven awarded in the whole of the Republic. Our warmest congratulations to

The European Language Label
SpEakWise was amongst the eleven winners of this year's European Language Label. The European Language Label, which is coordinated by the European Commission, is awarded annually to projects which demonstrate innovation in language teaching and education.

The Theater Gruppe of the Department of Germanic Studies was awarded the Annual Prize of the German- Irish Lawyer's Association for outstanding achievements in German Studies
