School of English PhD student addresses United States Air Force Academy conference
Final year PhD candidate William Brady (working with Professor Eve Patten) was recently invited to participate in a conference held at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where he gave a paper entitled ‘Fraternity of the Dead: Self-Annihilating Airmen in the Literature of 1940s Britain’. The conference, organised in conjunction with the international journal, War, Literature and the Arts, also heard keynote papers from the Pulitzer Prize-winning writers Susan-Lori Parks and Robert Olen Butler. William’s talk focused on the portrayal of suicidal British airmen in the literature of the Second World War and drew on the popular young-adult novels of W.E. Johns and the memoirs of several fighter pilots.
