Admission Requirements

PhD

Successful candidates will have:

  • An excellent background in economic theory and good technical skills as evidenced by their performance on a taught Master's degree programme in Economics or equivalent with a significant component of theory and quantitative methods.
  • Interest in pursuing research in an area of interest to a staff member. More specifically, in the application form you will be asked for a research proposal. The Department of Economics gives preference to students interested in pursuing research on topics in which staff members have a special interest. Staff Research Interests

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must present evidence of English language competency, for further details please visit the Graduate Studies website

The Department does not accept applications for part-time PhD students except under exceptional circumstances where an applicant can make a case that a substantial amount of his or her work time would be of relevance to his or her research. Even in these cases, the Department would want evidence that an applicant can make available a number of block periods of at least three or four months at a time during the research period before an application would be considered

Applicants must upload the following documentation via the online application portal (all documents must be supplied in English, or the original document plus official translation submitted):

  • Copy of full and official academic transcript(s)
  • Copy of degree certificate(s)
  • Research Proposal
  • Detailed CV
  • Two academic references
  • Valid English language test result (if applicable - see above)

Successful candidates will have:

  • A good upper second class honours primary degree in Economics. Some applicants may be invited to take some undergraduate coursework in order to bring their knowledge up to the required standard.
  • Interest in pursuing research in an area of interest to a staff member
