Research Profile:
RMM works in the area of the genomics and functional genomics of inherited complex diseases, with a focus on inflammatory/immune conditions. His main area of focus has been in coeliac disease, other inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract such as Barretts oesophagous and IBD, sepsis and currently, ankylosing spondylitis.
COVID-19 Project:
This project focuses on the genomics and transcriptomics of COVID19 in the Irish population. Genomic variation is likely to affect the course of COVID19 infection and little is known about this in the Irish context. Genome variation and gene expression in mild and severe patients will be examined. We aim to correlate these genomic data with clinical data regarding patient characteristics, comorbidities and disease course. We will examine bulk transcriptomic data and also examine the gene expression characteristics of single immune cells giving great insight to the function of the immune system in patients and how this relates to their genetic constitution and influences disease course. This project is part of a North South partnership which aims to develop a database of genomics of over 1000 individuals north and south of the border.
