COVID-19 Project: Investigating predictive immune biomarkers to determine the severity of disease, recovery and vaccine efficacy to improve the management and prognosis of patients with COVID-19
SARS-CoV-2 infection can occur with no symptoms or induce a spectrum of pathology from mild to severe lung inflammation, acute respiratory distress and cytokine storms, which may be lethal. The immune response to SARS-CoV-2 is a key determinant of the outcome to infection. We propose that a biomarker signature will be informative in predicting severity of disease outcome. Furthermore signatures may differ across patient cohorts and be modified by risk factors. These biomarkers could be used to predict clinical course, identify previous infection, determine if previous infection prevents re-infection and inform vaccine design.
