Research Profile:
Dr. Townsend is an academic clinician involved in delivering care to COVID-19 patients during their acute illness and recovery. He is interested in the immune mechanisms underpinning the clinical phenotypes seen in active disease and in convalescence.
COVID-19 Project:Investigating immune recovery post-COVID-19 and the possible immunological basis for long COVID
The pathological hallmark of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection is profound dysregulation of the immune response. However, the trajectory of immune recovery in the aftermath of infection remains poorly understood. I am part of a group investigating the changes that occur across immune cells and inflammatory markers following COVID-19, and exploring their possible relationship with persistent symptoms, in particular post-COVID-19 fatigue and breathlessness.
