Research Profile:

Prof. Bergin has clinical and research expertise in chronic viral infections and their treatment outcomes, health services research with particular interests in complications associated with HIV-HCV co-infection, health-related outcomes, medical education, clinical trials and pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment interventions. He developed the clinical specialty of Infectious Diseases at SJH and integrated the specialty with the previously established Department of GU Medicine. He has lead the political advocacy to establish the field of social inclusion health and in advocating for patients from underserved and disadvantaged populations. In March 2020 Professor Bergin was invited to become a member of the National Crisis Management Team (NCMT), HSE and in April joined the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), Department of Health (DoH). Professor Bergin was appointed as foundation National Clinical Lead, Infectious Diseases, HSE in March 2020.

COVID-19 Project:

Professor Bergin is an applicant /collaborator on 5 COVID-19 studies which have received funding from the HRB/ SFI and has had the results from several of these studies published already (see publications section). Professor Bergin is senior investigator on a national healthcare worker serology based testing programme (PRECISE) in St James’s Hospital and University Hospital Galway. Professor Bergin has partnered with the Irish Expert Modelling Group and UCD colleagues to address the social determinants of risk for disease acquisition amongst healthcare workers in St. James’s Hospital, important studies given the significant impact of COVID-19 infection on hospital staff. Professor Bergin is a co-applicant to the WHO Solidarity and CROWN Coronation (CROWN CORONATION (COVID-19 Research Outcomes Worldwide Network for CORONAvirus prevenTION) - Gates Foundation funded) studies. He is senior author of a study describing the off-label use of hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycine in hospitalised COVID-19 patients which were published in the British Journal of Clinical pharmacology in July 2020.
