Research Profile:

Dr Barry Moran runs the TBSI Flow Cytometry Facility. This is the busiest cytometry core in Ireland, with state-of-the-art instrumentation. Barry is very active in the flow cytometry community and is a committee member of the Royal Microscopical Society (Flow Cytometry section) and a director of the Cytometry Society of Ireland.

COVID-19 Project:

Flow cytometry is a complex technology used to interrogate the phenotype and function of cells in many areas of life science and biomedical research, including immunology and cancer. It involves sensitive, precision-based cellular analysis of multiple parameters on individual cells at incredibly high speeds. Millions of data points can be generated per second, requiring sophisticated analysis tools. Key infrastructure within TBSI’s Flow Cytometry Facility include high-end platforms (high-speed cell sorter, imaging cytometer, high-dimensional spectral analyser) and four advanced cytometer analysers. Flow cytometry will underpin much of the research undertaken within TCD’s COVID-19 Research Hub. For example, it will enable characterisation and functional analysis of the immune cells from uninfected and SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, as well as vaccine recipients. In addition, it will identify the cellular players and their output in novel vaccine research and development. Dr Moran has particular expertise in high-dimensional T cell analysis in immune dysfunction.
