Welcome to our tercentenary celebration of the Botany Department in Trinity College Dublin.
It all started with Henry Nicholson who was appointed as a lecturer in Botany in 1711. He gave his first lecture to a class of Medical students on 16 August 1711 and botanical teaching and research has remained a core activity within the College since then.
We have certainly seen considerable growth over the last 300 years so that now the Botany Department is a discipline of seven academics, four technicians and an administrator that oversee teaching in three undergraduate and two masters degree programmes along with dynamic research activity involving ten research fellows and forty-five postgraduate research students.
In these web pages we invite you to celebrate our achievements over the past 300 years and engage with us as we explore ways of bringing plant science to bear on the current and future challenges of the sustainable development of our world.
We are also eager to maintain an up to date contact list of alumni and others interested in our activities so we invite you to send your name, postal and email address to botany.300years@tcd.ie
