Mike B Jones
Michael Jones is the current professor of Botany. He was appointed to the chair in 1996. He completed his first degree in Biological Sciences and a PhD in plant physiology under the supervision of Professor Terry Mansfield, FRS at the University of Lancaster after which he held lectureships in Makerere University, Uganda for two years and at Lancaster University for one year. He then worked at the Agricultural Research Council, Grassland Research Institute in Hurley, England until his appointment to a lectureship in TCD in 1978. His researches in plant ecophysiology in TCD have focused on plant responses to global atmospheric and climate change as well as establishing the potential for mitigation of atmospheric change through the development of herbaceous energy crops. He has been involved in numerous multinational research programmes in Europe and Africa. During his tenure of the chair he has held several additional administrative posts including Dean of Science, Director of Trinity College Botanic Gardens, School of Natural Science Director of Research and Senior Dean. He is a fellow of the College and a member of the Royal Irish Academy.
