Microscopy and Imaging Centre

The Microscopy division of the School of Biochemistry and Immunology at TCD is integrating advances in Microscopy with Computer Imaging. The services of this facility are available to all researchers, both internal and external to the University. The instruments are designed for analysis of multiple dyes on fixed or live samples (e.g. multicolor immunofluorescence, intracellular regulation of pH and calcium, photoactivation, colocalisation studies FRET & FRAP). It has been developed to facilitate research in the biological sciences through the use of state of the art imaging systems.

For image analysis, there is a work station which has both IMARIS and AutoDeblur software from Bitplane available for all microscopy users. Imaris is Bitplane’s core software module that delivers all the necessary functionality for visualization, segmentation and interpretation of 3D and 4D microscopy datasets. AutoDeblur is the life science industry’s leading image deconvolution software. It offers the most complete suite of 2D and 3D algorithms available, including the industry’s only "Blind Deconvolution" algorithm.

Microscope room

There is a training course available for people who have never used a fluorescent/confocal microscope before. Training is done on a first come first served basis and generally in small groups of 3/4. However, training can be done on a one-to-one basis. It is advised that anyone who wishes to use the fluorescent/confocal microscopes contact Gavin McManus, email: mcmanug@tcd.ie or tel: 01 896 4326 to arrange training.

All microscopes are located in Room -2.46 in the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute.
