Date
Teaching in the first semester commences
during the week beginning 23 September 2013
and in the second semester during the week
beginning 13 January 2014. Please note this is
a day-time course.
Duration
The course runs for a total of twenty-two weeks
in two parts. Part 1 runs through the first
semester; part 2 runs through the second
semester.

Introduction to Jewish
Civilisation from Antiquity
to the Modern Period
(
Part 1 and Part 2)
The purpose of this course is to introduce
students to the development of Jewish
civilisation from the earliest period to the
present. The course is designed for those who
are just starting their study of Judaism and it
equips the student with knowledge of the central
issues and main texts in the formation of Jewish
identity. The intention of this course is to allow
the student to acquire a basic knowledge of
Jewish culture and history. Part 1 focuses on
basic aspects of Jewish culture including the
Jewish library, calendar and festivals. Part 2
provides an introductory overview of Jewish
history from the rabbinic period through
medieval Europe, the Middle East, Spain and
North Africa to modern Jewish life in Western
and Eastern Europe, the US and Israel.
