Biography

Personal information: Dr M. Ruhl, Date of birth: 16 April 1980, Nationality: Dutch Researcher unique identifier: ORCID-ID: 0000-0001-8170-0399; Google-Scholar: Dr Micha Ruhl Website: https://www.tcd.ie/Geology/people/ruhlm/ - www.micharuhl.com Highlights: I have a high international standing within the earth system science community, particularly on studying marine and continental environmental change during past global climatic perturbations using novel geochemical proxies and methods. I have a demonstrated track record in procuring and managing independent research grants, extensive experience supervising and mentoring students and postdoctoral research fellows, and a prolific publication record including invited book chapters in edited volumes and peer-reviewed journal articles in high profile international journals. I lead and participate in several international projects, such as the UNESCO International Geoscience Programmes 739 (Co-PI) and 652, the International Continental Drilling Programmes i) JET (Early Jurassic Earth System and Time, and ii) Colorado Plateau Coring Project 2 (CPCP-2). International recognition for my work is exemplified by the high number of citations relative to peers, frequent invitations to give seminars and key-note lectures at international institutions and conferences, and invitations to serve as Editorial Board member for Geology, and as voting member for the International Union of Geological Sciences' International Subcommission on Jurassic Stratigraphy. I lead the stable-isotope mass spectrometry laboratory at the School of Natural Sciences, at Trinity College Dublin.

Research Expertise

Key-words: Palaeoclimatology, Mass extinctions, Global Change Events, Sedimentary Geochemistry, Integrated Stratigraphy I apply sedimentological, stratigraphical (chemo-, bio-, cyclo-, magneto), and low-temperature geochemical methodologies to constrain causes and consequences of past global climatic & environmental change events, mass extinctions, and changing depositional environments. - Past Climates & perturbations to the global carbon cycle: Earth's climate and the environment have changed on multiple temporal (10E2-10E7 yrs) and geographical (local"global) scales. My research aims to constrain the (causative) internal and external forcing mechanisms and positive and negative feedback processes that controlled Earth's climate and environment. In particular, I am interested in understanding (1) how Large Igneous Province (LIP) volcanism impacted on global climate and environments, global biodiversity (mass extinction/evolution) and changes in global (bio)geochemical cycles; (2) how external processes, such as astronomical forcing impacted on global climates, environments and local sedimentary depositional conditions; and (3) background conditions in the global climate & environment and global carbon cycling. -- For this research I study some for the largest climate change & mass extinction events in Earth history. - Depositional environments: My research aims to constrain the physical, biological and geochemical processes that control sediment deposition and carbon sequestration in marine and terrestrial (including lacustrine/lake) sedimentary basins, and how these are affected by climatic and environmental change on local"global scales. -- For this I study for example the processes that controlled carbon drawdown and preservation during past global Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs). - Geo- and Astrochronology: My research improves the geological timescale through absolute and relative dating of sedimentary deposits, with the aim to constrain the rate of change in physical, biological and geochemical parameters recorded therein, including changes in the rate of past extinctions & evolution, the rate of carbon release and sequestration associated with past climate change events, etc. This research is conducted through major international research programmes, such as (i) the UNESCO International Geoscience Programme (IGCP), for which I served as Co-PI and member of several successful past and present projects, (ii) the International Continental Drilling Programme (ICDP), for which I serve as member of current projects and PI and Co-PI of current drilling proposals, and (iii) the International Ocean Discovery Programme (IODP), for which I served as land-based project participant.
