Law Student Colloquium

Student Colloquium

The fifth annual Law Student Colloquium will take place in the Graduates’ Memorial Building and the Law School, Trinity College Dublin, on Saturday 16th February 2013.

The panels will commence at 10.00. A reception will be held at 16.45 in the Graduates Memorial Building and will be followed by the Second Brian Lenihan Memorial Address at 17.30. The Address has been incorporated in order to mark the late Mr. Lenihan's substantial contribution to Irish public life, his longstanding connection to the Law School as a student, scholar, and lecturer, and his recent tragic death. This is the keynote event of the Colloquium will be chaired by Mr. Rory Montgomery, Ireland's Permanent Representative to the EU. The keynote speech entitled "The Constitution, the Courts and the Legislature" will be given by Mr. Peter Sutherland KCMG SC, former Attorney General of Ireland and non executive Chairman of Goldman Sachs.

The event has enjoyed enormous success over the past few years and would not be possible without the kind sponsorship of Allen & Overy, William Fry and the Friends of the Colloquium.

The Colloquium aims to attract the brightest and most engaged law students and give them a forum in which to discuss topical and important legal issues. Successful entrants will present on the panel which is best suited to the topic of their paper. Last year, the ten panels were: Constitutional Law; Criminology and Penology; Medical Law; Recent Developments in Commercial Law; Philosophical Foundations of the Common Law; Feminist Perspectives on Criminal Law; Comparative Law; Intellectual Property; International Law and Banking Law.

The centrepiece of the Colloquium will be the Second Annual Brian Lenihan Memorial Address, which will take place in the evening. The Address has been incorporated in order to mark the late Mr. Lenihan's substantial contribution to Irish public life, his longstanding connection to the Law School as a student, scholar, and lecturer, and his recent tragic death. This is the keynote event of the Colloquium and is delivered by a central public figure in Irish life.
